The Queen's Knight Castles
|
I like the story of Payn de Turberville who, on arriving after the Norman invasion, discussed the acquisition of Coity Castle with the Welsh leader, Morgan Gam.
Evidently, Morgan agreed to turn over his castle to Sir Payn on one condition: either the Norman had to fight Morgan for the lordship or he had to marry Sybil, Morgan's daughter. Symbolically (and wisely), Payn took the proffered sword in his left hand and clutched Sybil with his right. They married and Sir Payn de Turberville became Lord of Coity. |
Most castles in Wales are currently managed by the Welsh Government, CADW, P.O. Box 353 Cardiff CF1 5XA Telephone: (0222) 500200 (country code 44)
Castles are usually open to the public. Many are free, but the better preserved are not. It is a delight to find one quietly parked on a mound in a grove of trees. A small annual fee enables you to visit all CADW castles for free.
