One thing one realises very quickly when trying to photograph wolves is that they don't stay still for long. They are still for the longest time when they are hidden from view! I was cheating with these shots. I was feeding them from a hide. My worst problem was they were too close, giving them very long-looking noses! Wolves were not a big problem to medieval people - apart from the livestock they took. On a personal level, as far as attacking people goes, they don't. Like bears, there are the usual caveats, not threatening their young, lying around wounded, or looking too much like lunch.
