There are still wild wolves in the Pyrenees. They have an incredibly sharp sense of smell. If you go walking in the Pyrenees, you have virtually no chance of seeing one as they smell you from kilometres away and keep out of sight. They don't deserve their bad reputation - largely invented by wicked authors of fairy-tales. These, at the Maison des Loups are still untamed; they live as a pack in the woods, behind a fence.
Feeding the Wolf at the Door
Lucky tourists are allowed to feed the wolves, from a darkened hide, behind glass. On? Dog biscuits of course! When we had finished feeding them, we all sat in the dark, chatting. I opened a bar of chocolate (for my lunch) and the white wolf came up and stared at it, quite plainly saying, 'What about some of that?' You could see the moment I opened the packet that the smell reached her. The wolves could obviously see us, although we thought we were hidden!
