White Castle

White Castle is an impressive twelfth century Norman castle, situated near Llantilio Crossenny. The name derives from the white limewash that covered the stonework.

The outer bailey was an area where an army could encamp, protected by walls and the gated entrance. This was built to prevent disasters such as happened to King Henry III when his army was attacked and routed while it was encamped outside Grosmont.
